Indoor and outdoor landscape for the glass-domed Jewel at Singapore’s Changi Airport
The Jewel at Changi Airport captivates the visitor with its fusion of nature within the lush central “valley”, and the smart shopping levels beside and below. ICN was appointed as Executive Landscape Architect, to take the landscape designs by Peter Walker and Partners, and then doing the work needed for the tender, select the best Contractors who have the capacity and expertise to install such complex works, and then oversee the implementation physically on site.
This was a huge task: finding and installing multiple plant species at large sizes to create an instant effect. Plants had to match specifications for an interior environment of low light levels, low temperature and humidity. A good climate and soil body conditions were essential so that the chosen plants would survive long term. To date this has been successful,
It was equally important for visitors to have accessible spaces tuned to ideal thermal comfort. So all public areas were landscaped and airconditioned to provide rich and comfortable experiences such as dining facing the forest valley and giant waterfall, on the open deck at the top, or trekking along the forest trails.
