A City Precinct with hotel, residential and office towers, and conserved heritage buildings
City Development’s South Beach project connects 3 original city blocks into one remarkable traffic free and heavily landscaped precinct. Designed by Foster and Partners, this stands out as a different way of creating city blocks, seamlessly blending existing heritage buildings to modern high-rise towers. All of this is linked by pedestrian concourses, sheltered by a dramatic lofty and airy canopy.
The easily walkable plazas and corridors link each area, including the lower plaza leading to the MRT station and the landscape follows these patterns of movement along with water features at strategic locations. At almost every juncture, the heritage buildings along Beach Road connect to the contemporary architecture, with paths and planting flowing freely between each space. There are several large landscaped sky gardens covering the full footprint of each tower for the use of residents, hotel guests and office staff.
There is a significant setback for street landscape all around the complex, and this is fully exploited by rich landscapes which define access pathways, building frontages, water bodies for the heritage buildings, and fountains outside the hotel and at the interface with the War Memorial Park.
