Resort World Sentosa

Singapore’s decision to develop casinos created huge interest and stimulated worldwide competition. The ‘integrated resort’ on Sentosa included hotels, entertainment zones, casino and theme parks. Although Sentosa Island had long been a tourist destination, the intensity and scale of these new developments needed considerable landscape site planning to stitch new development within a fifty hectare site.

The competition master-plan radiated a series of linking plazas from a dramatic centre out to forested areas of resort villas amongst preserved heritage trees. The central heart welcomes people with flowing public plazas and courts activated by fountains. The human comfort of these spaces is kept several degrees below the ambient temperature through clever combinations of shade structures, tree canopies and water. The hotels were designed within the resort style landscape with variations in planting to create distinctions in character and subtle changes across the site, from the grand coastal waterfront to the forested hills behind. A stunning array of public places for visitors to enjoy.
