Centering world famous Changi Airport is Jewel, an extraordinary building under a sweeping dome of glass. Five storeys of wrapped glazing above ground, floods the atrium with daylight for people, plants and water. Yet the space feels intimate and the building’s softening form compliments the low profile of the surrounding airport terminals. Inside, the landscape is remarkable.
While Jewel serves the airport as a unique destination of shops and restaurants for travellers and locals, the great dark-grey “caldera valley”, provides it’s dramatic heart. Surrounding an apex water display Jewel’s vast landscape, is a powerful realisation of a forest; canyon like stairs and waterfalls, forest trails and intimate glades clothed with thousands of trees and palms. At each tier balconies allow dramatic views of cascading plants. The climate had to be comfortable for people, and conducive to the plants, so each tropical plant species was tested for performance and adaptability to the climate-controlled conditions. More than 3,000 trees, palms and plants were acclimatised to achieve this impressive environment.
